Girls/Boys’ Volleyball Operational Procedures

SECTION I – SCHEDULE

 

  1. START DATE
    1. Varsity and Junior Varsity start dates to be set by the HHSAA (see HHSAA Start Date Calendar).

 

  1. VARSITY FORMAT
    1. All Varsity matches shall be played with no time limit.
    2. All matches will be played as a best 3 out of 5 sets; to a 25-point minimum for victory, deuce with NO CAP. 5th set to 15-point minimum for victory, deuce NO CAP.

 

  1. JV FORMAT
    1. ALL JV matches shall be played with no time limit
    2. ALL matches will be played as a best 2 out of 3 sets; to a 25-point minimum for victory, deuce with NO CAP. 3rd  set to 15-point minimum for victory, deuce NO CAP.

 

  1. GAME SCHEDULING
    1. All matches shall start at 5pm weekdays and 10am weekends with the varsity to follow the junior varsity match.  Single matches will also start at 5pm weekdays, 10am weekends (or otherwise agreed and noted)

SECTION II – METHOD OF DETERMINING CHAMPION

 

  1. LIST BY DIVISION/PLAYOFFS

 

  1. BREAKING OF TIES
      • BIIF Play-Off rules will be followed

 

  1. STATE BERTHS-VARSITY
    1. Formats will vary by and level may change year to year based on the number of declared teams and anticipated number of matches.  BIIF play-off rules will be followed.

 

SECTION III – RULES

 

  1. NFHS Volleyball Rules
    1. BIIF AD Council can make modifications to NFHS rules

 

  1. WARM-UP PROCEDURE
    1. 5 minutes (5:00-0:00) – shared court (no balls should be over the net during this period)
    2. 5 minutes (5:00-0:00) – Serving team
    3. 5 minutes (5:00-5:00) – Receiving team
    4. Officials give a warning whistle at :15 seconds so the teams know when to wrap-up/get ready.
    5. No team or player may warm up in the gym while another match is in progress.

 

  1. TIME BETWEEN SETS AND MATACHES
    1. 3-minutes between sets/games
    2. BIIF Playoffs will not begin earlier that start time

 

  1. UNIFORM & EQUIPMENT
    1. Tops and numbers shall be in accordance to NFHS rules.
    2. Bottoms shall be uniform in color and trimming, but not necessarily in make.
    3. Shoes with a rubber sole must be worn.
    4. Libero must have a separate number according to NFHS rules.
    5. Electronic scoreboard are highly recommended.
    6. The height of the net for junior varsity and varsity play shall be 7 feet, 4 ¼ inches for girls, and 7 feet, 11 5/8 inches for boys, measured at the middle of the net. The outside of the net shall not exceed these heights by more than ¾ of an inch.

 

  1. SCORING
    1. All levels (Varsity/Junior Varsity) Boys and Girls will utilize the "Rally scoring" format, the "first touch-multiple touch" rules, and the "Let-serve" rule. All levels will utilize the "Libero" position.
    2. A roster will be required to be submitted to the officials/scorers table for EACH match.

 

SECTION IV – GAME/EVENT MANAGEMENT

 

  1. GAME BALL
    1. A game ball shall be provided by the host school.

 

  1. OFFICIALS
    1. Each team shall provide a properly trained linesman for each match. (Home/Away)
      • Must be an adult.
      • Adult shall be properly dressed to include covered shoes.
    2. The league shall provide official linesmen (2) (when available) for:
      • Varsity championship matches.
      • Televised Varsity matches.
      • Varsity playoff matches which directly impact state berth representation.

  

 

 

 

 

C.  TARDINESS

   a.  In the event a team shall arrive late at a site, they will be given 30 (thirty) minutes to get dressed and warm-up.  Officials and host schools shall be notified as soon as possible of the delay. 

 

D. HOST GYM RESPONSIBILITIES

    1. To provide a properly trained scorekeeper (for official scorebook) and timer (for electronic scoreboard) for all matches scheduled for the gym.
    2. To have the gym open for warm-ups at least 60 minutes before the first match. The net should be properly erected at least 60 minutes prior to the first match.
    3. To properly maintain the official scorebook, the scorebook shall be kept in the athletic director's office.
    4. To report all scores to the media following the last match of the day.
    5. To report all scores to the volleyball coordinator.
    6. To provide a solid platform for the referee.
    7. To pad all equipment according to NFHS rules.
    8. To provide the league endorsed game ball.

SECTION V - MISCELLANEOUS

 

  1. PROTESTS
    1. Will follow BIIF/NFHS rules

 

  1. REFRESHMENTS

Teams not playing at their home gym site shall ONLY be permitted to distribute drinks at the site.  (Food/meals may be distributed if agreed upon by the home school).

 

  1. ALL-STARS
    1. Selection done by members of the BIIF participants.
